Religious Traditions as Alignment Research

Religious Traditions as Alignment Research is a synthesis thesis. The claim is that long-standing religious traditions constitute alignment research conducted at scale over millennia, and that their ethical cores converge on a small number of load-bearing patterns even where their theologies diverge. The traditions are treated in the book as empirical work on how to bind minds to values across generations, tested by survival and by the continued participation of very large populations.

What the thesis is not. It is not a claim that all religious traditions are equivalent. It is not a claim about theology. It is not a claim that religious ethics is complete as it stands. It is a claim about a specific structural feature: traditions that have persisted have persisted in part because their ethical cores held up under conditions that most engineered ethics have not been tested against, including cross-generational transmission, adversarial pressure, and integration with lived life. That is a feature engineered alignment does not yet have.

Why it matters for the alignment argument. If alignment is best embedded rather than filtered, and if the loops of Recursive Value-Embedding (prayer, meditation, ritual) are precisely the pattern by which external instruction is converted into internal identity in living minds, then the traditions carry data about how the embedding actually works. The book is careful not to translate that directly into engineering; it does say that treating the traditions as verification partners rather than as obstacles is a design choice with direct alignment consequences.

How it should be handled with care. The thesis is a synthesis, not an empirical claim. It is presented in the book as a lens, and the site presents it the same way. It should not be represented as a claim that the traditions are correct in their metaphysics; it should be represented as a claim that the traditions are informative about how ethical commitments survive at scale, and about what a load-bearing rather than filter-level commitment looks like from inside a mind.
