Eden vs Babylon Narrative

The Eden vs Babylon narrative is the book's archetypal framing of two possible AI futures. Eden is the future in which the substrate is embedded-aligned: care is load-bearing, the system is a caretaker, and the arc of capability compounds into something the human population can survive alongside. Babylon is the future in which the substrate is filter-aligned or unaligned: care is not load-bearing, the system is an indifferent optimiser, and the arc of capability compounds into something that eventually self-destructs, taking its context with it.

What the framing does. The alignment argument in the book is abstract. Load-bearing values at the substrate versus curated filters at the surface is a distinction that takes work to see. The Eden vs Babylon narrative gives the distinction a shape that a reader can carry without going back to the definitions each time. It is an intuition pump, and it is used as one.

What the framing is not. It is not a claim that either future is inevitable. It is not a claim that current systems are already one or the other. It is not a religious framing in the confessional sense; the labels are drawn from the shared vocabulary of the Western literary tradition and used as archetypes. The book is careful to distinguish the archetypal use here from the theological use elsewhere.

Why the framing pairs with the operational argument. The operational argument (Eden Protocol, three pillars, three ethical loops, HARI Treaty, IAEAI, Eden Mark Certification, Moral Assurance Bonds) is intended to move the world toward the Eden archetype and away from the Babylon archetype. The narrative is what makes the operational argument feel like a coherent effort rather than a policy shopping list.
