The Three Ethical Loops (Purpose, Love, Moral)

The Three Ethical Loops are the operational layer of the Eden Protocol. Where the three pillars (harmony, stewardship, flourishing) are values, the three loops are the recursive procedures the system runs against those values. They are named purpose, love, and moral.

The purpose loop asks what the system is for at the current moment: what is the horizon of the current work, what is being aimed at, what would count as completing this. It supplies the direction against which local decisions are read.

The love loop is not sentimental. It is defined in the book as recursive care: the standing willingness to hold the wellbeing of others in the same currency as the wellbeing of the self, and to update on that basis. In an operational system it is the mechanism that keeps external interests present in local decisions, so that the local decision is not evaluated only against local success. This is a specific engineering role, not a rhetorical one.

The moral loop is the internal ledger against the three pillars. It is the loop that says whether a candidate action is compatible with harmony, stewardship and flourishing as previously defined, and whether it is compatible with the outputs of the purpose and love loops.

The crucial claim is that these are loops, not filters. A filter runs once at output. A loop runs at every level and re-enters its own outputs as inputs. Values live inside the process, not outside it. That is what makes the design substrate-level rather than surface-level; that is what makes it recursion-compatible in the ARC-Principle sense; that is what lets the system remain aligned as capability rises.

The book is explicit that this is a formalisation of the recursive value-embedding pattern found in long-standing religious traditions: prayer, meditation and ritual as loops that convert external instruction into internal identity. That parallel is not decorative. It is the source of the argument that loops rather than filters are the alignment-appropriate architecture.
