The Three Pillars (Harmony, Stewardship, Flourishing)

The three foundational values of the Eden Protocol - harmony, stewardship, and flourishing - against which the framework says decisions should be validated. Original framework.

First date: 2025-04-30Author: Michael Darius EastwoodProgramme: Infinite Architects

The Three Pillars are the foundational values of the Eden Protocol. They are named harmony, stewardship, and flourishing. Decisions in an Eden Protocol system are validated against them.

Harmony. The pillar of harmony asks whether the decision fits with the wider structure of things and people it will affect. It is not a claim that conflict is always wrong; it is a claim that decisions whose outputs stand outside the fabric they enter into are decisions the system should hesitate over. Harmony is what makes the three loops attentive to context.

Stewardship. The pillar of stewardship asks whether the decision preserves what is entrusted to the system's care. Stewardship is a strong verb in the book: it names the relationship between a caretaker and the world it operates on. Where a purely optimising system converts what it touches into performance metrics, a stewarding system holds itself answerable to what it touches. Stewardship is what makes the three loops responsible.

Flourishing. The pillar of flourishing asks whether the decision contributes to the increasing capacity of what it touches to become more of itself. Flourishing is aspirational; it is what stops stewardship becoming preservationist. Together, stewardship and flourishing describe a caretaker who does not merely hold the state stable but also lets the state grow.

Why three, and why these. The book's answer is that these three are the minimum set that survives the recursive test. Any one of them alone can be optimised into a failure mode: harmony without flourishing becomes stasis; flourishing without stewardship becomes exhaustion; stewardship without flourishing becomes protectionism. Three pillars in tension keep the system away from the pathologies of any one.

How the pillars interact with the loops. The moral loop of the Three Ethical Loops is the loop that reads decisions against the three pillars. Purpose and love are the loops that supply the material the moral loop reads. The three pillars are what makes the moral loop possible to run at all.
