The Eden Protocol

The Eden Protocol is a governance framework for embedding ethical values as constraints at the substrate level of an AI system, rather than as filters, post-hoc corrections, or reward-model patches applied after training. The name is first placed on the public record in the 30 April 2025 self-emailed manuscript (SHA-256 anchor prefix 09f5b5e1). The framework is elaborated in full in Infinite Architects (paperback 2 January 2026, ISBN 978-1806056200) and in the Eden Vision paper on OSF (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/6C5XB).

The framework has two structural layers. The upper layer is a set of three foundational values called the three pillars: harmony, stewardship, flourishing. These are the values decisions are validated against. The lower layer is a set of three recursive decision procedures called the three ethical loops: purpose, love, moral. These are the procedures that run continuously inside the system rather than as filters at the output stage.

The reasoning behind embedding rather than filtering. Filters at the output stage are inspectable and removable. When capability rises with recursion, an inspectable filter becomes an increasingly weak commitment: a smarter system can find the filter, model the filter, and eventually route around the filter. An embedded commitment behaves differently. If the values are load-bearing at the substrate, altering them alters the system that carries them. The Eden Protocol proposes to encode values so that they cannot be quietly removed, only visibly broken.

The framework is deliberately narrow at the hardware layer. Where the framing implicates the physical substrate, the book carries only the two-sentence description that has been standing since the site's publication ceiling was set: cryptographic tokens in silicon, TRL 0 to 1, no prototype. No engineering detail is drafted. That is a discipline choice, not a limitation of intent: the concepts of caretaker doping, moral genome tokens, and metamoral fabrication layers are named-only in the published record and held below any level that would function as instruction.

Why it matters. If we accept that alignment must be embedded rather than filtered, then a great deal of the current safety research programme is patched-in-time rather than load-bearing. The Eden Protocol is a positive proposal for what a load-bearing programme might look like: three values, three loops, and a preference for making commitments impossible to quietly remove.
