Michael Darius Eastwood first published the specific empirical treatment of the claim that capability improvements in AI systems do not entail alignment improvements - that the two axes scale independently and cannot be assumed correlated - on 9 February 2026 in Paper III: 'The Alignment Scaling Problem' (OSF DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/6C5XB). Priority is over the specific formulation and evidence marshalled on this date, not over the underlying orthogonality intuition (Bostrom 2012 is prior art).
