'A self-email proves nothing.' What a Gmail server timestamp actually establishes.

The evidence chain behind this research programme starts with an email the author sent to himself at 02:45 UTC on 8 December 2024. A reasonable sceptic asks: so what? Anyone can email themselves anything. Here is precisely what the artefact establishes, and what it does not.

What it establishes

When Gmail accepts a message it assigns a Message-ID and a server-side timestamp on Google's infrastructure, and verifies the sending domain's DKIM signature in transit. Neither the sender nor anyone else can retroactively insert a message into Gmail's stores with a past date. The published SHA-256 hash of the exported .eml then binds the file you can download today to a specific byte sequence. To fake this evidence you would need to have compromised Google's mail infrastructure in advance, in December 2024, on the chance it would matter later.

What it does not establish

A timestamp proves existence, not merit. It proves the manuscript's 189,355 words existed before Anthropic's paper; it does not prove they were right, and it is not a recognised priority mechanism in scientific publishing. The programme states this limitation on its own evidence page: this is a documented anticipation claim, not a formal priority claim. The scientific weight comes from what happened next: the alignment faking result ten days later, and eighteen further independently sourced convergence events since, each carrying its own primary source.

How to check it yourself

Download the redacted .eml from the evidence page. Run shasum -a 256 against it and compare with the published hash. Inspect the Message-ID header. If you want the DKIM signature itself, it survives in Gmail's original, viewable through Show Original; the export format does not preserve it, which is why the programme describes the evidence as Google-server-timestamped rather than claiming full signature verification on the export. Precision about small things is how you earn trust on large ones.
