What happened

OpenAI+Broadcom Jalapeño inference ASIC: 9-month tape-out, 10 GW deployment target through 2029, Microsoft among deployment partners.

Why it is in the register

OpenAI's Jalapeño chip, announced June 2026 with Broadcom, is a vertical integration move: the model company becoming a silicon company, with a ten gigawatt deployment target. Every major laboratory is now doing the same. The Chokepoint chapter's argument was that compute infrastructure is where control concentrates and therefore where governance must attach. The industry reorganising itself around exactly that concentration is the thesis confirmed by capital allocation.
